Plus it's not like the guy's any sort of leading man; his best moments come when working alongside folks like Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, or Chevy Chase, or when he's given a really juicy supporting role. Odd that their combined efforts would yield such a resoundingly laugh-free spectacle, but we can perhaps attribute some of Doctor Detroit's ineffectiveness to director Michael Pressman.

The movie intercuts his obsessive lifestyle with another one, that of Smooth Walker , one of the more unlikely Chicago pimps to come out of the movies in many a year. Nothing too fancy here, folks, but good enough to warrant a listen. Dean Swift as Thomas Erhart Jr. And now that I'm old enough to notice such things, I cannot forgive the flick for its drab direction, its ceaselessly unamusing premise, and a screenplay that borders on worthless. Carrey could salvage the rather garish R-rated sitcom known as Doctor Detroit. Instead of giving us a standard mope and, later, a standard berserk maniac , he adds all sorts of little character touches that help the whole movie rise above its production-line origins. Doctor Detroit is that grungy old uncle, and frankly, you won't be able to get him out of your house quickly enough. As much as I still dig the Aykroyd, I find myself somewhat amazed that his career survived movies like this one and Caddyshack 2. Part of that is because of the studied precision of , in the title role.
